Truckee is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains one hundred miles northeast of Sacramento, California and thirty miles southwest of Reno, Nevada on Interstate 80 in northeastern California. There are several Truckee exits off Interstate 80 with the city center exit being Exit 186. Donner Pass Road is a slower, scenic route to arrive to Truckee from the west.

Truckee is just 20 miles north of Lake Tahoe. There are two routes to and from Lake Tahoe; Highway 89 from Tahoe City, and Highway 267 from Kings Beach, California. Highway 89 follows the Truckee River from its outflow from Lake Tahoe and is the route to take if going to Squaw Valley Ski Resort or Alpine Meadows. Truckee can also be reached from the north by Highway 89.

Accessible By Air and Rail

If arriving by air, Truckee is served by the Truckee Tahoe Airport, which is a community airport for small aircraft. It is located on the southeastern outskirts of the city. The airport is a short flight from the San Francisco International Airport. The Reno–Tahoe International Airport is thirty–five miles east of Truckee via Interstate 80 and Interstate 580. It is a popular destination as it serves the gaming destinations of Reno and beautiful Lake Tahoe. Direct flights to Reno–Tahoe International Airport can be found from much of the American West and Midwest.

Truckee is also easily accessible by train. Amtrak serves over five hundred cities in the United States and offers daily stops in Truckee. Taxis, bus service, and rental cars are also available in Truckee to help you reach your destination.
